Hi Parents,
I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! Here is what is going on in our classroom this week:
Height-tall and short Weight-heavy and light Capacity- holds more and holds less Here are the standards: MGSEK.MD.1 Describe several measurable attributes of an object, such as length or weight. For example, a student may describe a shoe as, “This shoe is heavy! It is also really long!” MGSEK.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measureable attribute in common, to see which object has “more of”/”less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. example, directly compare the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter. Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category. MGSEK.MD.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers in each category and sort the categories by count. (Limit category counts to less than or equal to 10 Please continue to review counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night or skip counting. Please also have students continue to focus on writing numbers 1-20, especially teen numbers that begin with a 1. Students who have mastered this can skip count and write those numbers. You can do this with chalk outside, write it in shaving cream, etc. To practice sorting, use different items from around the house to sort like coins, utensils, art supplies, etc. To review 2d and 3d shapes, continue going on shape hunts around your house and the community. It is important to continue reviewing previously taught concepts.
We will continue our 4th IB unit this week: How the world works The transdisciplinary theme is: An interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies. -The learner profiles we will focus on this unit are: risk-taker, inquirer, and knowledgeable. The attitudes are curiosity and cooperation. Discuss with your child how they can display these learner profiles and attitudes and why it’s important to display these. -The central idea/or big idea of this unit is: Senses help to observe and describe the world around us. These are the topics we will delve into: -The way things move and the reasons why (form/reflection) -The effects of gravity (reflection) -Patterns and how they affect construction (causation) -Using the senses to describe and group objects by observable properties (causation) -Earth’s materials and natural resources (form) Continue to check out the class Weebly, as it is updated often! www.Frankkindergarten.weebly.com As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Keyboarding Skills Resource
Fulton County Schools has purchased a new digital resource for K-5 students to support the implementation of the ELA Georgia Standards of Excellence related to the production and distribution of writing using digital tools and including keyboarding skills beginning in Grade 3. The resource is Learning.com's EasyTech Keyboarding software, which provides a complete keyboarding and word processing curriculum. Keyboarding skills is a key component of the production of writing standards for grades 3-5 and required as students respond to constructed-response items on the ELA Georgia Milestones. Students can access learning.com through Launchpad. Hi Parents,

Ms. Frank Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition
Once again, it’s time for the annual Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition sponsored by the Georgia Council of English Teachers (GCTE) and the Georgia Department of Education. The purpose of this competition is to encourage our K-12 students to develop enthusiasm for and expertise in their writing, provide a context to celebrate their writing success, and recognize student achievement in the arts and academics. WHAT TO WRITE Unlike many writing competitions, the YGA does not provide a prompt to which students must respond or provide any other boundaries to their genre choice or creativity beyond a 1900-word limit. (if typed, double-spaced Times New Roman is preferred). Entries may include:
Entries must be submitted to Lori Dunagan by Monday February 27,2017 so that we can submit to the county by March 1. If you have further questions contact Lori Dunagan [email protected] Hi Parents,
I hope you have all had a wonderful break and holiday season. I am excited to see the kids again tomorrow!
**Just a heads up that I will be updating students’ independent sight word lists the week of January 23rd. **
If you happen to have any extra quarters, dimes, and nickels laying around, we would greatly appreciate any donations for students to work with in the upcoming weeks. We will continue to review the following: -Comparing numbers as well as the appropriate symbols for greater than, less, than, and equal. I will teach students that the “alligator” (<,>)always eats the bigger number we will continue decomposing numbers. (10+3=13 or 13=10+3, 10+8=18 or 18=10+8, etc.) What you can do at home: Have students choose a number between 11 and 10, draw ten frames and represent that number on a white board, with chalk outside, with markers, and then write the equation. When students have mastered this, they can work on numbers 20 and up (10+10+3=23 or 23=10+10+3, 10+10+10+7=37 or 37=10+10+10+7) We will also discuss how many groups of 10 and how many ones are in a number. Example: For the number 17, there is one group of 10 and 7 left over/For the number 21, there are two groups of 10 and one left over. We will use base 10 blocks. Here is a great website for base 10 students can use at home: http://www.abcya.com/base_ten.htm Please continue to review counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night or skip counting.
