Hi Parents,
I hope you all had a fantastic break!
Please continue to review counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night or skip counting. Please also have students continue to focus on writing numbers 1-20, especially teen numbers that begin with a 1. Students who have mastered this can skip count and write those numbers. You can do this with chalk outside, write it in shaving cream, etc. To practice sorting, use different items from around the house to sort like coins, utensils, art supplies, etc. To review 2d and 3d shapes, continue going on shape hunts around your house and the community. It is important to continue reviewing previously taught concepts.
We will begin our 3rd IB unit: Where we are in place and time -The learner profiles we will focus on this unit are: communicator, inquirer, and open-minded. Discuss with your child how they can display these learner profiles and why it’s important to display these. -The central idea/or big idea of this unit is: By exploring the world around us, we can learn more about ourselves. These are the topics we will delve into: *Time patterns around the world (day/night chronological vocabulary ) (change) *Explorations of journeys and personal history. (perspective) * Tools we use to determine location and understanding our relation to it. Hi Parents,
I hope you are all having a nice weekend. Here is what is going on this week: This month’s cookies for character learner profile is reflective. The attitude is appreciation. Discuss with your students how they can be reflective and appreciative in their daily lives. We review classroom rules every day in class. Please make sure to review classroom rules with your children at home. **Please make sure students are reading and doing homework every night. ** If you would like me to send leveled books home at your child’s level, please e-mail me and I will be happy to do so. They come with comprehension questions which are great for practice. Monday morning we will be going to the book fair to preview what there is. Students will browse and begin making a list of items they would like. The kindergarten teachers normally let students go with family members to the book fair on the day of our feast (before or after lunch depending on time). Students can also bring money and go on a different day too. Wednesday is the big day! The performance is at 9:00 but I suggest you get here before then because the cafeteria fills up quickly! Last call for empty mac and cheese boxes and white shirts on Monday! J Please make sure students are practicing for our Thanksgiving performance every night. The song is called “Albuquerque Turkey”. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwBNuxbpIJ8 Friday we will be going to the science lab. Reminder- No School November 16th-25th for Thanksgiving break. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family! J The sight words for this week are: run, said, and little. Please make sure students are practicing sight words every night whether it is the class weekly sight words, moving ahead with other sight words on their independent list, or a combination of both. It is important to work on sight words because this help students with reading. Sounding out words and knowing letters/letter sounds is also an important factor in reading. If/When students have mastered all of their words, you can move to spelling sight words. The word family for this week is –ub. Please make sure to go over previously taught word families as well. We will continue to discuss the following blends/digraphs and their sounds: ck, ai, ay, ou, ow, ch, sh, th, wh, qu, -ing, and the 3 sounds of y, ee, and oo. We will also review how a, e, i, o, and u make 2 sounds as well as the 2 sounds of c and g. In math this week, I will be giving students our end of unit shapes assessment including naming/identifying/describing 2d and 3d shapes, giving real world examples of 3d shapes, comparing and contrasting a 2d/3d shape (we have focused on a cube and a square. If you would like to review at home, here is what we discussed: They are the same because they each have vertices and a cube is made up of a square face. They are different because the square is 2d/flat and the cube is 3d/solid and a square has sides and a cube has faces and edges), quadrilaterals are shapes with 4 sides-rhombus, trapezoid, rectangle, and square, and sorting, counting, and ordering objects. It is important to continue reviewing previously taught concepts. In writer’s workshop we will continue information unit of study. We will be working really hard to finish all of our how-to pieces including detailed pictures, labels, and using transition words in writing. The pieces we will finish up include How to carve a pumpkin, a How To thanksgiving piece, and the life cycle of an apple tree. I am reminding students about the phrase, “When we are done, we have just begun.” If they think they are finished, they can always go back to what they have done so far and keep adding. What you can do at home: have students practice sounding out words and writing down the sounds they hear on paper. You can also work on having students write sentences with capital letters at the beginning, finger spaces in between words, and a period at the end of their sentence. Students can find something outside your house and practice labeling diagrams and drawing diagrams showing texture, any holes, bumps, etc. In reading groups, students who are with me will be working on reading strategies at their level and reading books at their instructional level. We will be reading some fun books on Thanksgiving like learning about cranberries, what others are thankful for, how to mash potatoes, etc. Students will also be using the book to answer within the text questions and beyond the text questions. We will be discussing within and beyond the text questions, how this story is relevant to their lives, and connections- Text- Text connection-Is it like another story you have read? Text-Self Connection- Does this remind you of something that happened in your life? Text- World connection- Does this remind you of something that happened in the world around you? We will also work on predicting before we read stories, and discussing if our predictions are correct. It is okay if predictions aren’t correct because we haven’t read the story yet. We have only used the title and the pictures on the front cover to guide us in our predictions. What you can do at home: Practice sounding out words, finding word families in books, make predictions about unfamiliar books, have students read to you or you read to them and ask them questions about who was in the story, what happened in the story, where it took place, when it took place, what this story reminds them of (in their life, in another book, or an event that happened in the world around them.) In social studies, we will apply what we know about symbols to introduce students to crests. Students will be making a crest that symbolizes themselves based on what we learn about what different symbols, colors, shapes of crests, etc. mean. At home you can discuss the following: If you were to make a family crest, what would be on it? What symbols, shapes represent your family, what colors are important to you, etc. We will continue to review the following positive character traits: honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, self-control, moderation, and accomplishment. Discuss with students how they display these character traits at home, on the soccer field, etc. and why it’s important to have these positive traits. Who are some people they know that also display these traits and why? You can continue to discuss the following too: -The learner profiles we will focus on this unit are: thinker, open-minded, and caring. Discuss with your child how they can display these learner profiles and why it’s important to to display these. -The central idea/or big idea of this unit is: Symbols are used to represent information, beliefs, and values of a culture. - We will also continue to focus on the following: * Symbols and people that represent our country (perspective) * Symbols and people that represent countries around the world (perspective) * How positive character traits can shape an individual (reflection/responsibility) -When students are learning about/displaying the learner profiles and discussing symbols and positive character traits, we want students to have the following attitudes: creativity, appreciation, and respect.
