Hi Parents,
I hope you are all having a nice weekend. Here is what is going on this week:
We will review the following positive character traits: honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, self-control, moderation, and accomplishment. Discuss with students how they display these character traits at home, on the soccer field, etc. and why it’s important to have these positive traits. Who are some people they know that also display these traits and why? You can continue to discuss the following too: -The learner profiles we will focus on this unit are: thinker, open-minded, and caring. Discuss with your child how they can display these learner profiles and why it’s important to to display these. -The central idea/or big idea of this unit is: Symbols are used to represent information, beliefs, and values of a culture. - We will also continue to focus on the following: * Symbols and people that represent our country (perspective) * Symbols and people that represent countries around the world (perspective) * How positive character traits can shape an individual (reflection/responsibility) -When students are learning about/displaying the learner profiles and discussing symbols and positive character traits, we want students to have the following attitudes: creativity, appreciation, and respect. I hope you are all having a nice, long weekend. Here is what is going on this week:
We will continue discussing that 2d shapes are flat and 3d shapes are solid. You can go on a 3d shape scavenger hunt around your home or when you are out running errand. What things in the real world look like a cone, cube cylinder, or sphere? Coming up, we will discuss comparing a 2d and 3d shape such as a cube and a square. These are the same because the cube has square faces and they are different because a cube has 8 corners(vertices) and a square has 4. We will also discuss decomposing shapes where students take a square post it note and can cut it to make two rectangles or two triangles. We will also learn about composing shapes-putting two shapes together to make a new shape. Ex.-putting two squares together to make a rectangle, putting two trapezoids together to make a hexagon, etc. Please continue to review counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night or skip counting. Please also have students continue to focus on writing numbers 1-20, especially teen numbers that begin with a 1. Students who have mastered this can skip count and write those numbers. You can do this with chalk outside, write it in shaving cream, etc. To practice sorting, use different items from around the house to sort like coins, utensils, art supplies, etc. It is important to continue reviewing previously taught concepts.
