Hi Parents!
It has been so great getting so spend more time with the kids and getting them adjusted to our school day! We will continue with the same schedule next week- Live lessons will be for morning meeting/whole group math and whole group ela. Specials classes will continue to be live in the specials’ team. Students who are face to face with me will complete their assignments in class. As a reminder, you received an email from Mrs. Nash stating Wednesdays will be asynchronous. The only part of the day that will be live on Wednesday will be morning meeting. For students attending face to face, please continue sending devices if possible and headphones. Students can bring back their library books next week to get a new book. On Wednesday during morning meeting, Mrs. Marshall will be doing her first official lesson- a read aloud! Mrs. Whitacre will join our morning meeting on Thursday for a counseling lesson on listening. The previous lesson on this was postponed. Don’t forget, curriculum night was rescheduled to October 7th at 6:30. This week I will have students in class with me take the iready math screener (we took reading last week). If the math screener is showing up for you at home in math, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT. Once students have completed the screener in math and reading, they can get back to working on their lessons. If they want to finish any teacher assigned lessons they can. They will also have lessons based on where the diagnostic screener placed them. Don’t forget students need to be on math and reading for 45 minutes each week (although it might be different on assessment weeks.) Please remind students to take their time, pay attention, and do their best. We like to see at least 80% accuracy on each lesson. I have also been telling students in class not to guess and to look at any and all answer choices given to them. In math this week, students will take their unit 1 summative math assessment on Tuesday which will be a grade. This activity is due on Tuesday. Everything else will be due on the given due date. Students need to know the names of the 2d and 3d shapes, positional words, how a circle and a sphere are the same and different, how many faces and vertices are on 3d shapes, how to sort objects by shape into groups, how to draw different 2d shapes, and defining attributes (what makes a shape, a shape-any sides, corners, and if it is closed.) We will begin our unit on counting. This week we will begin talking about different counting strategies and learn about ten frames. Students will also listen to the story “Ten Black Dots” and get to make their own creation with 10 black dots! Please make sure students practice counting by 1’s and 10’s to 100 every night if needed. For students who have mastered this standard, you can practice counting by 1’s to 200 and/or skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, etc. Here are the standards we will focus on for this unit : MGSEK.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens. MGSEK.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. MGSEK.CC.2 Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1). MGSEK.CC.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects). MGSEK.MD.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. In ELA, we will continue with our Lucy Calkins reading and writing units of study. In reading, students will listen to the story, “The Carrot Seed.” Students will practice pointing to and reading the words from this book. There will also be a reading “celebration” since they have learned SO much! Students can get dressed up, bring out their stuffed animals, and read a book with a loved one. Please make sure students are reading some of the book too. 😊 In writing, students will work on asking and answering questions from a partner (stuffed animal/adult/ sibling) to add more details in words and pictures as they are writing. Students can answer the questions, “Is there anything more you know about that you can teach?” or “Why did you write this book?” Students will also continue to stretch out words even more. They don’t need to know how to spell the words perfectly- Please try not to spell words for students. They can have their sight word flashcards out to help them spell those words too. Instead, help them sound the words out. I would rather them practice sounding out the words and listening to all the sounds they hear and getting those on paper than having perfect spelling. In social studies, the kids will be learning how to be responsible school and classroom citizens. Since we are transitioning from URL and returning to school and learning about rules, roles, and responsibilities, we will be focusing on these for face to face instruction. **Important reminders**

Hi Parents!
We are starting phase 3 this week. With phase 3, there are some updates. You received an email from me on Wednesday stating what day your child will be attending if they are returning for phase 3. We will still continue to follow our URL schedule. There won’t be any official office hours, but of course, please email me if you need to meet with me and we will schedule a time! We will now have lunch, recess, and specials! Please see the phase 3 schedule which is attached. The only sessions that will be synchronous for students at home will be morning meeting, math whole group, specials (with specials teachers in their team), and reading whole group. My small groups this week will be with those students in the classroom due to assessment and also to continue building relationships and delving more into classroom and school rules and procedures. . Please note, there are some time changes for different content areas starting this week. Please also note in the lesson plans, what materials your child needs to bring for specials when they attend. As a side note, if you have any extra magazines around the house, we would greatly appreciate any donations to keep in our classroom as we will be using them for next week and throughout the year. Since students will be here all day and we will be having recess, lunch, and specials, if you want to send an extra mask for students to keep in their bookbag in case the one they are wearing gets dirty, feel free to do so! Students can continue to bring their own devices. We may or may not need them but it would be good for them to have just in case. Please plan on sending headphones with students regardless so that each child has their headphones for their device or a classroom device. The cafeteria will be operating for breakfast and lunch, so students can buy one or both meals if you choose to do so. Snacks won’t be provided by the nutrition department for phase 3. Please make sure to send a healthy snack and water bottle with your child daily. I will be starting to give reading assessments and Iready diagnostic assessments in class this week. For those students not returning just yet, please be on the lookout for an email from our CST, Ms. Rousseaux to get you set up to take the Iready math and reading diagnostic at home. In math this week, we will continue to learn about 3d shapes as well as start mixing up 2d and 3d shapes. We will work on comparing a circle and a sphere, a cube and a rectangular prism, and a square and a cube. Towards the end of the week we will start mixing up 2d and 3d shapes. It can sometimes be difficult, for instance, for students to name a circle, then a cube, then a rectangular prism, triangle, etc when going back and forth between 2d and 3d shapes. This is something you can do at home to practice as well. On Friday, students will have a summative on 3d shapes. Students need to know the names of the 3d shapes and their attributes (how many faces, edges, and vertices there are.) Please have 3d shapes ready for students so they can use them to count the attributes if needed. I know it can be hard to tell on just the picture. You can help students on the technology aspect and reading of the names of the 3d shapes, but please do not give them the answers. This will be a grade. As a heads up, we will be giving a 2d and 3d summative the following week so you can continue to review 2d and 3d shapes and their attributes. We will then start our unit on counting and numbers. **Please make sure your child submits the formative assessment on Friday. Everything else will be due on the due date. 😊 ** In ela this week, we will continue with our Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing units of study. In reading, students will work on adding connecting words like and then, after that, next, etc. as they flip the pages of the book. They will also practice more on using exact character words using the old favorite storybook, “The Three Little Pigs.” In writing, students will continue to work on writing about something they know about, even if it might be a hard to write idea. We will discuss how students don’t give up even if something is challenging. We will think about the story, “The Little Engine that Could,” and thinking “I think I can, I think I can” when we get to a difficult part. We will also talk about planning out the pages in our book. Students will think of the topic they want to write about and plan what they want to teach on each page. In social studies, we will continue our unit on community helpers. Students will listen to several community helper mysteries and come up with clues for their own community helper! Hi Parents!
We have had such a great first week back! It’s been so nice to finally see the kiddos in person and can’t wait to see everyone else soon! Just as an FYI, I will be out Thursday so Mrs. Gillon will be taking over our synchronous lessons. As I stated last week, I wanted my math small groups for this past week to be with kids that were in the class so I could get them acquainted to the classroom and review rules and procedures. Next week will look a little bit different since we will be going back to small groups for math and reading like we did last week. Your child will have one day to log in for both math and reading (regardless of if they are virtual or in school) and everyone will be whole group in reading and math on Friday. Due to students coming to school on their original small group day, I had to move some student days around. Following this email, I will let you know what your child’s small group day will be next week. Most students’ days stayed the same but some did change, again, depending on what day they were assigned to come to school for face to face. You will see calendar invites in our team- just join the group for your assigned day. 😊 We will continue logging in for morning meeting every morning as a whole group. Our counselor, Mrs. Whitacre, will be joining our morning meeting on Thursday to do a counseling lesson on listening. Social studies will be asynchronous. Mrs. Adler is taking the community helper questions all of the kindergarteners have submitted this past week and interviewing those community helpers. You will see videos of them answering the kids’ questions next week and talking about their role in the community. The independent practice for social studies Monday-Thursday will be watching the videos and recording a “Wow” fact they learned from each of the community helpers. 😊 On Friday, students will begin inquiring into our country of study which is France! They will be researching France’s geography. In math next week, we will begin talking about 3d shapes. We will discuss that 3d shapes can also be called solid shapes. Students will learn the names of a sphere, cube, cone, cylinder, pyramid, and rectangular prism. We will discuss the attributes that 3d shapes have- faces, edges, and vertices. We will also talk about how many faces, edges, and vertices each 3d shape has. Students will work on identifying real world 3d shapes and creating 3d shapes out of different materials like a cube out of toothpicks and marshmallows or a sphere out of playdough. *Even though we will be talking about 3d shapes, please continue to review the names of 2d shapes and how many sides and corners they have. For ELA, we will continue with Lucy Calkins readers and writer’s workshop. In reading, we will talk about old favorite storybooks which are those that we read over and over again and can retell each page! When we retell each page, we will learn that we have to make sure the words and the pictures match. We will also practice talking like the characters to make the book come alive! We will do this with the book, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” In writing, we will learn to think about a topic they want to write about before they write. We will talk about visualizing, or closing our eyes, picturing the topic to write about, and then put all the details into the pictures and the words. Students will also learn the rubber-band strategy (or stretchy snake strategy) to practice stretching their words out like a rubber band to help them hear all the sounds in a word to get them onto their paper. We will practice saying the word slowly and starting with the first sound we hear, repeating the word and listening for the next sound, etc. Coach K wanted teachers to remind parents that PE is required. She also wanted me to pass along that students will need the following for PE next week: Next week 09/14-09/18 students will need a bath/beach towel, 3 pairs of rolled up socks, 1 container (such as laundry hamper, empty box, storage container, etc.) Don’t forget that curriculum night is Tuesday at 7:00. If you aren’t able to make it or have other students’ classes to attend, the session will be recorded. **Important reminders**
Alexis Frank Kindergarten Teacher Heards Ferry Elementary Hi Parents!
I know that our schedule keeps changing and that it can be overwhelming. My goal is for your child to have as much consistency as possible, but please continue to be patient and flexible with us as things are changing daily and weekly. This week, students have the option to return for face to face instruction. One of the goals for phase 1 is creating meaningful relationships between students and their teachers which is why I would like for my small groups this week to be with those students who are in the classroom. Morning meeting will continue to be synchronous for all students whether they are in the classroom or at home. You will notice that on this week’s lesson plans in math, we will be doing whole group calendar synchronous lessons and whole group synchronous mini-lessons (the seesaw pre-recorded videos) for students in class and at home. After the math whole group synchronous mini lesson, students at home will independently complete the math Seesaw activity (The videos are attached to the activity in case you want to go back and re-watch them). We will be conducting small groups with students who are in the classroom. If your child will not be attending in person for phase 1, they will have the option to attend a virtual math small group this Wednesday with me. Students who also aren’t able to attend in person on Monday due to Labor Day can also join the virtual math small group with me this Wednesday. There will be a calendar invite for this. In math this week, we will review 2d shapes and positional words. Students will have a formative assessment on this content on Friday on Seesaw. Formative assessments help teachers understand what students understand at this point in the unit. For this formative, students need to know the names of the 2d shapes, how many sides and corners/vertices the shapes have, and positional words. You can help students with the technology component, but please let students answer the questions on their own. We will move on to 3d shapes next week. You will also notice that we will be doing synchronous whole group ela mini lessons (the seesaw pre-recorded videos.)When students go off to do their independent work for ELA, they won’t need to watch the video unless they missed the whole group time. Everyone will complete the activities. In reading and writing this week, we will begin our Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study. For writing, students will be introduced to getting their ideas on paper and begin drawing and writing/labeling something they know about. We will discuss that when students think they are done, they can go back over their piece and add to their pictures and their words(labels and sentences). After they add to their pictures and their words and have checked over everything they can then start a new piece. Our saying for this is, “When we are done, we’ve just begun!” In reading, students will understand that they can read the world around them such as words on cereal boxes, signs in the community, and much more! We will talk about reading from cover to cover and going back and re-reading to learn more. The same saying in writing applies to reading too: “When we are done, we’ve just begun!” Students will also learn about “WOW” pages in their books. A “WOW” page is a page that students find an interesting piece of information that they learned about. We will also plan on social studies being asynchronous this week as a new group of students will just be arriving for afternoon sessions. Students will be coming up with questions they have for different community helpers. Please note, specials will now be on Teams instead of Seesaw. Directions are in the lesson plans and in the video. This is an example for art, but it should look like this for all specials. **Important reminders**
For those students returning for face-to-face instruction, here is some important information for their return:
