Hi Parents! I hope you are having a great weekend! Here is what is going on in our class this week:
Tuesday is college pride day. Send students decked out in their favorite college gear! Fall pictures will be this Wednesday. If you plan on sending money in to purchase pictures, please don’t send it in until the day of pictures. Thursday we will be going to the library. Please make sure students bring back their library book so they can check out a new one. Thursday evening is curriculum night. Friday will be our first visit to the science lab! Friday is also our next team spirit day. Have students come wearing anything and everything YELLOW! In math we will continue our counting unit. We will be focusing on counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s and writing numbers to 20. Please make sure students are practicing counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s every night and practicing writing their numbers. (Fun ways of writing numbers can be with chalk outside, in sand or shaving cream, on a whiteboard, etc.) When students have mastered this, you can practice skip counting by 2, 3, 4, etc. and discuss odd and even numbers. Another standard in this unit is sorting, counting, and ordering groups. What you can do at home: Have students sort silverware, coins, beads, etc. by color, shape or size. Students can then count how many are in each group and put the groups in order from least to greatest amount or greatest to least amount. Here is a fun website to practice this standard: http://www.abcya.com/counting_sorting_comparing.htm In writer’s workshop we continue our Lucy Calkins narrative unit of study. We will talk about the importance of not getting discouraged if something is too hard to draw or write and that if we have trouble adding details to our words and pictures we can close our eyes to imagine what it looks like. This week we will review “When you are done, you have just begun.” Students can add to their pictures, add to their writing, look over their writing with a partner, or start a new piece. We will also continue to practice stretching out words like a rubber band if students aren’t sure how to spell a word and add labels to our pictures. What you can do at home: have students practice sounding out words and writing down the sounds they hear on paper and draw pictures with details and label their pictures. You can also remind students that when writing, the first letter in a sentence is uppercase and the rest is lower case, there are finger spaces between words, and periods at the end of sentences. We will continue to work on this in class. During reading, I will continue observing students’ reading behaviors and students will continue reading/looking at nonfiction (teach about the world) books from their book bins independently and with a partner. We will focus on how “Readers Read With A Partner.” (Please see below) What you can do at home: Read every night like you are working with a partner (sit side by side, have a book in the middle, read back and forth, etc.) and ask your child questions about what she/he is reading about. In social studies, I will discuss the wonder wall in our classroom. When students have a question or a “wonder” about what we are studying, they can write it down on a sticky note and put it under their picture of the wonder wall. We will continue talking about community helpers and how they are similar/different in other communities including other countries around the world, students’ role as a citizen in their community, and the different roles in a community. Students will compare/contrast different pictures of community helpers in different communities. What you can do at home: Discuss the following: Why is it important to be a good citizen? What is a community? What is a community helper? What role do I play in a community? We will continue our first IB unit. Transdisciplinary theme: Who We Are Central Idea: Roles and responsibilities in a community develop connections to others around the world. Lines of Inquiry: Different roles in the community (function) Similarities and differences between communities (connection) My role as a citizen in a community (responsibility) Transdisciplinary skills: communication, social, self-management, research Key Concepts: Function, connection, responsibility Learner Profile: Communicator, thinker Attitudes: appreciation, respect, tolerance Related Concepts: roles, citizenship, relationships What you can do at home: Discuss the learner profiles of communicator and thinker and the attitudes of appreciation, respect, and tolerance and how students can display these in their community. There is an IB tab on our Weebly page that also has more information. As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Alexis Frank

We had a fantastic first week of school and am looking forward to week number 2! I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend. Here is what is going on in our class this week:
This is the first week for our “Student of the Week.” I look for this student during the previous week and choose this person based on following class and school rules, taking initiative, etc. The certificate will come home in your child’s folder on Friday if they are chosen. Every student will get a chance to be “Student of the Week.” Make sure to take a look at our class Weebly page as I will be updating it periodically with information and pictures. Here is the link: http://frankkindergarten.weebly.com As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Alexis Hello Parents!
It was another great day in kindergarten! Today we continued to learn about different places and things in our classroom. We talked about how to walk and be safe in the hallway and about earning Eagle Points! We set up our class “Go Noodle” and enjoyed singing, dancing, and getting our wiggles out. We explored some of our math manipulatives and worked collaboratively with partners. Just a couple of quick reminders! Our special tomorrow will be PE. Please make sure students wear tennis shoes. Please continue to check your student’s yellow daily folder and send it back with them every day. Also, if you ever need to send in a change of dismissal, note, lunch money, etc… place it in this folder. Have a great night and let me know if you have any questions! Alexis Hi Parents!
Hi Parents!
It was wonderful meeting you all Friday and I am so excited to have your children in my class this year. It will be a busy, but fun year, and I look forward to teaching your students. Every week (usually on Sunday) I will send a weekly update via email which includes things such as class sight words and word families for the week, topics we are studying/standards, and important things going on in our classroom/school such as the library, any testing we might be doing, etc. We also have another mode of communication/giving information. Each teacher has a “Weebly” which includes our schedule, class list, homework, and many other resources. This will be updated throughout the year. The weekly update that I send every Sunday will also be available on Weebly. You can access our classroom’s Weebly page at the following link: http://frankkindergarten.weebly.com/ This week we will be going over classroom and school rules and procedures. We will also be doing a lot of getting to know you activities. We will be reading stories such as “Chrysanthemum”, “First Day Jitters”, “Wemberly Worried,” and others. I will also be introducing classroom centers- the listening center, reading center and library, computers, etc. Our specials schedule is as follows: Monday-Art Tuesday- Music Wednesday- PE Thursday- Spanish Friday- PE Please make sure students wear tennis shoes on PE days. Please remember to send a healthy snack each day for your child. You can also send water bottles for your children to keep in their cubbies if you would like, but we do have a water fountain in the classroom. Once we get room parents and the Shutterfly page set up, I will ask for a volunteer each month to send in a snack of some sort for students who forget to bring a snack or don’t have one. Last year some of my parents went to Sam’s or Costco and got a couple big tubs of Goldfish, applesauce, string cheese, etc. We will have plenty of volunteer opportunities this year as well. A frequently asked question I get a lot too is about birthdays. You are welcome to bring in store bought snacks that don’t contain peanuts to lunch. We ask that you serve the treats towards the end of lunch so students can eat their meal first. Our lunch time every day is from 10:30-11:00. (We eat snack in the afternoon.) A few important reminders: -Please make sure to put the yellow transportation stickers on students the first 2 days of school with the information filled out. (These are located in the manila envelopes you took with you at open house.) -Please make sure to return all stapled items to me by this Friday, the 11th. One of the stapled items is an interest inventory that you can fill out with your child. -The school supplies purchased will be community items throughout the year. The school supply list can be found on the Eagle Alliance Website. Please pay important attention to the earbuds that students will need this year. Each student will use their own set of earbuds for the computer and Ipads. -***I sent out a transportation confirmation to everyone yesterday. If you have not yet confirmed this with me, please do so by the end of the day. I want to make sure everyone gets home the right way.** Lastly, if you know of someone in our class that did not receive this email or I need to use a different email for you, please let me know so I can get that fixed for you as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email me! Alexis |
